Who counts as a dependant?

Across almost every country, a dependant means your husband, wife, civil partner, or de facto or unmarried partner, and your children under eighteen. It does not mean your parents, and it does not mean your siblings. This trips up a lot of families in Pakistan who assume they can bring a parent along. For a partner who is not formally married to you, most countries want proof of a genuine relationship, often twelve months or more of living together or clear evidence of an ongoing commitment.

Which countries allow dependants in 2026?

The honest headline is that dependant rules have become much stricter in the UK and Canada, while Australia remains relatively open. Here is the picture at a glance.

Because the rules move so often, always confirm the current position for your exact course before you build any plan around bringing family. What was true two years ago is not the rule today.

United Kingdom: who can still bring family?

Since January 2024 the UK has closed the dependant route for most students. Today you can only bring your partner and children on a Student visa if you are studying a full time PhD, other doctorate, or research based higher degree of nine months or longer at a provider with a good compliance record, or if you hold a government scholarship and your full time course of any level lasts at least six months. Students on taught master’s programmes like an MSc, MA, MBA, or LLM, and undergraduates, cannot bring dependants. The impact was dramatic: sponsored study dependant visas fell by around eighty one percent in the first six months after the change.

If you finish an eligible course and move onto the UK Graduate Route, your family can stay only if they were already your dependants during your studies. Canada: the new spouse and children rules

Canada also narrowed its rules. Your spouse can still apply for a spousal open work permit, but only if you are enrolled in a master’s programme that lasts sixteen months or longer, a doctoral programme, or one of a select list of professional and eligible programmes. Spouses of students in shorter master’s courses, most bachelor’s degrees, and college programmes no longer qualify for that open work permit. Separately, dependent children are no longer eligible for a family open work permit at all under this measure.

This does not mean your family cannot come to Canada with you, it means their ability to work is restricted. A spouse who does not qualify for the open work permit may still be able to accompany you as a visitor, and children can usually attend school. Australia: bringing family on a Subclass 500

Australia remains the most family friendly of the big three English speaking destinations. On a Student visa, Subclass 500, you can include your spouse or de facto partner and your children under eighteen. A de facto partner usually needs to show at least twelve months of a genuine relationship before you lodge. The single most important rule is that you must declare all family members in your original student visa application, even if they do not plan to travel with you straight away. Netherlands and Europe

Much of continental Europe still allows students to bring family through family reunification, provided you can prove enough income or savings to support them. The Netherlands is a good example, where a partner and children can generally join a student who meets the financial requirements. How much extra money do you need to show?

For a 2026 Subclass 500 application you must show living costs of AUD 29,710 for yourself, plus AUD 10,394 for a spouse or partner and AUD 4,449 for each dependent child, all on top of tuition and travel.

The UK and Canada apply their own maintenance rules for eligible dependants, and the sums rise with each family member. The message is the same everywhere: bringing family multiplies the money you must prove, so budget honestly before you commit.

Can your spouse work?

• Australia: a partner of a bachelor’s level student can usually work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and a partner of a master’s or PhD student can often work with no hour limit.

• United Kingdom: dependants of eligible students, mainly PhD and government sponsored, can usually work, but remember most students can no longer bring dependants at all.

• Choosing a taught master’s when you need family with you. In the UK this closes the dependant door. A research degree or PhD keeps it open.

• Trying to bring parents. Parents are not dependants under student routes in these countries.
