What IELTS Band Score Do Pakistani Students Need to Study Abroad? (2026)

If you want one number to plan around, aim for an overall band of 6.5. That single score keeps almost every English speaking destination open to you, and it clears the government minimum in every case. Here is the realistic range each major destination asks for in 2026:

• United Kingdom: visa minimum around 5.5 in each part; most universities want 6.0 to 7.0 overall.
• Canada: most universities want 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.
• Australia: student visa minimum is now 6.0 overall; universities usually want 6.0 to 6.5.
• New Zealand: 6.0 overall for a bachelor’s, 6.5 for a master’s.
• Ireland: commonly 6.0 to 6.5 overall.
• Europe (English taught): often 6.0 to 6.5, sometimes lower for foundation programmes.

Two different rules: the visa and the university

This is the part that confuses most families in Lahore, so read it twice. There are two separate English rules, and you have to satisfy both.

Rule one: the government (visa) minimum

The immigration department sets a floor. For a UK degree the Home Office asks for CEFR level B2, which for IELTS for UKVI means at least 5.5 in each of the four sections. Australia’s Department of Home Affairs raised its student visa floor to 6.0 overall in 2026. These are minimums to enter the country, not to get admitted to a top course.

Rule two: the university requirement

Your offer letter carries its own number, and it is usually higher than the visa floor. A Russell Group university in the UK may ask for 6.5 or 7.0 with 6.0 in writing. A well ranked Canadian university sticks to 6.5 with no band below 6.0. When people ask “what score do I need,” the honest answer is: whatever your chosen university prints on your conditional offer, as long as it is at or above the visa floor.

IELTS band needed for each country

United Kingdom

For a degree, the visa rule is modest at 5.5 per section, but the university is the real gate. Foundation and pathway programmes may accept 5.0 to 5.5. Canada

Australia and New Zealand

Australia’s visa floor is 6.0 overall, and most universities ask 6.0 to 6.5. New Zealand asks 6.0 for a bachelor’s and 6.5 for a master’s. Undergraduate versus postgraduate

The gap here is smaller than people expect, but it exists. A bachelor’s degree usually opens at 6.0 overall. A master’s usually starts at 6.5 because the reading and writing load is heavier. Research degrees and scholarship shortlists push higher still. If you are targeting a funded place, treat 7.0 as your working goal rather than a stretch.

Can you study abroad without IELTS?

Yes, and more students do it every year. Many universities accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or the Duolingo English Test. Others waive the English test if your previous degree was taught in English, backed by a medium of instruction letter from your college. Some European and Asian destinations run English taught programmes with their own internal test or an online interview.

How the 0 to 9 band scale works

IELTS reports four section scores plus one overall band. Each runs from 0 to 9 in half point steps. Your overall band is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half. So a 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 gives you a 6.25, which rounds up to a 6.5. That rounding rule is why one weak section can quietly pull you down, and why a balanced profile beats a lopsided one.

• Band 5.5: modest user, enough for some foundation entry.
