Do Pakistani Students Need a TB Test for a UK Student Visa? (2026)

Yes. Almost every Pakistani student applying for a UK student visa needs a tuberculosis test certificate before they apply, because Pakistan is on the Home Office list and student courses run longer than six months. The test has to be done at a clinic the Home Office has approved, and a certificate from anywhere else is not accepted. The certificate stays valid for six months from the date of your chest x-ray. In Pakistan the approved clinics are run by IOM and AMC in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur, and the fee sits in the region of PKR 10,000 to PKR 15,000 depending on the clinic and your age.

Do Pakistani students need a TB test for a UK student visa in 2026

Who actually needs a TB test?

Three conditions have to be true at the same time. You are coming to the UK for six months or more. You have lived in a listed country for six months or more. And you were living in one of those countries within the last six months. Pakistan is on that list, and a bachelor or master degree runs well past six months, so the answer for a normal Pakistani student is straightforward.

The rule itself sits in Appendix Tuberculosis of the Immigration Rules rather than in guidance, which matters more than it sounds. Rule TB1 states that a person must provide a valid TB certificate with their application where the appendix applies and they are applying for entry clearance to come to the UK. That is a requirement of the rules, not a recommendation from a caseworker. An application that should carry a certificate and does not is an application with a missing mandatory document.

A few people are caught by the rule even on shorter trips. Applicants for a Returning Resident visa need one. So do people applying as a fiance, fiancee or proposed civil partner on the family route. Students rarely fall into either group, but family members travelling with you may.

There is a narrow exception that people misread constantly. If you have been living outside the listed countries for more than six months, and you can evidence that, the requirement may not bite. A student who spent the last two years studying in Malaysia and has the visas and stamps to show it is in a different position from a student flying out of Lahore. Most Pakistani applicants are not in that position, and assuming you are is an expensive assumption.

Dependants matter too. If your spouse or child is applying to come with you, each of them needs their own certificate, subject to the same rules. One certificate does not cover a family. Every person on every application is assessed on their own.

Which clinics in Pakistan are approved?

This is where money gets wasted. The Home Office publishes a specific list of approved clinics for each listed country, and the guidance is blunt about what happens if you go elsewhere. Your test must be from a clinic approved by the Home Office. A certificate from a clinic that has not been approved will not be accepted.

That means a chest x-ray from your family hospital is worthless for this purpose, however good the hospital is. Aga Khan, Shaukat Khanum, a well regarded private lab in DHA, none of it counts unless the clinic appears on the published list. Students do this every year, usually because a relative recommended a hospital they trust, and then pay twice.

As of 15 August 2026, the Home Office list of approved clinics in Pakistan covers two providers across four cities. IOM runs Migration Health Assessment Centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur. AMC operates in Islamabad and Lahore.

  • Islamabad, IOM: second floor, Maroof International Hospital, F-10, and a second centre on the ground floor of IDC, Pakland Square, G-8.
  • Lahore, IOM: House Number 70, H Block, Gulberg III, near D Ground.
  • Karachi, IOM: Plot F-14, PECHS Block 6, Shahra e Faisal, near KFC.
  • Mirpur, IOM: House 66-A, Sector F-2, near the MDA Office, Mirpur AJK.
  • Islamabad, AMC: Building 14, Civic Centre, Melody, G-6 Markaz.
  • Lahore, AMC: 8-B Chaudhary Ali Anwar Road.

Note the Mirpur centre. Azad Kashmir applicants have historically travelled to Islamabad for this, and many still do out of habit. If you are from Mirpur or nearby, check the local centre first and save yourself the trip.

Clinic details change. The Home Office page was last revised in February 2026 to update contact details for the AMC clinic in Lahore, which tells you how often small things move. Check the official list on the day you plan to book rather than working from a screenshot somebody shared in a WhatsApp group.

Practitioner tip. Book the TB test before you have your CAS, not after. The certificate is valid for six months, a CAS is usually valid for six, and students who wait for the CAS then discover the nearest clinic has a two week queue end up applying later than they intended. The test is one of the few steps you can complete early with no downside.

How much does the TB test cost?

Prices are set per clinic and per age band, not nationally. Two figures matter: one for children under eleven, who are usually screened without a chest x-ray, and one for everybody aged eleven and over.

As of 15 August 2026, the Home Office clinic list for Pakistan gives the IOM fee as PKR 10,000 for a child under eleven and PKR 14,000 for anyone aged eleven or over. The same page puts the AMC fee at PKR 11,000 under eleven and PKR 15,000 for eleven and over.

One caution, and it is the reason we quote a band rather than a single number. IOM's own published schedule for Pakistan lists PKR 14,500 for the Lahore centre while the Home Office page shows PKR 14,000 for all IOM sites. Two official sources, two numbers. Where that happens the honest answer is a range, so budget PKR 10,000 to PKR 15,000 per person and confirm the exact figure with the clinic when you book.

ClinicUnder 1111 and over
IOM, Islamabad, Karachi, MirpurPKR 10,000PKR 14,000
IOM, LahorePKR 10,000PKR 14,000 to 14,500, confirm on booking
AMC, Islamabad and LahorePKR 11,000PKR 15,000

Set against the rest of a UK application, this is a small line. The visa fee, the healthcare surcharge and the money you have to hold in your account dwarf it. It is still worth budgeting properly, because a family of four applying together will pay this four times over, and because a repeat test after going to the wrong clinic is money that buys nothing.

For the larger numbers, our guide to the bank statement a UK student visa needs from Pakistan sets out the maintenance requirement and the twenty eight day rule that sits behind it.

What happens at the appointment?

The visit is more routine than students expect. You register, your documents are checked, you complete a health questionnaire, you see a clinician, and if you are eleven or over you have a chest x-ray. Women are asked about pregnancy before any x-ray is taken.

IOM states that an assessment takes roughly three to four hours. Treat that as the appointment, not the whole day, but do not book a morning slot and a university interview in the same afternoon. Queues at the Islamabad and Lahore centres get long in peak intake months, which for UK students means June through August and again around December.

If the x-ray is clear you are normally issued a certificate within a few days. Some centres hand it over the same week, some ask you to collect it. The certificate names you, carries your photograph and gives the x-ray date, which is the date the six month clock starts from.

Bring the fee in the form the clinic asks for. Some centres take cash only. Check when you book, because turning up with a card at a cash counter costs you the slot.

How long is the certificate valid?

Six months from the date of your x-ray. That is stated on the public GOV.UK page and repeated in the rules themselves, where Rule TB3 requires that the certificate was issued within the six month period immediately before the date of application and has not expired.

Read that carefully, because the wording catches people out. The six months runs to the date you submit your visa application, not the date you travel and not the date your course starts. A certificate issued in January is fine for an application filed in June. It is no use at all for an application filed in August, even though your flight is in September.

The sensible sequence is: get the test done once your university offer is firm and your finances are in place, then apply within a couple of months. Doing the test twelve months ahead because you are organised simply means doing it twice.

Rule TB4 lets an entry clearance officer require a fresh certificate before granting entry clearance where the original expired more than six months earlier. Rule TB5 allows the requirement to be waived, but only in narrow circumstances where obtaining a certificate is genuinely impossible. Neither is a route a normal student application should ever need.

What do you need to bring?

The document list is short but it is enforced. Turning up without one item usually means rebooking.

  • Your original passport, valid, plus a photocopy or colour copy.
  • Three recent passport size photographs on a white background, neutral expression, no glasses.
  • A completed applicant history questionnaire, which the clinic provides.
  • Your Family Registration Certificate, which IOM asks Pakistani nationals for.
  • Any medical or laboratory reports relating to previous or current TB treatment.
  • Your full UK address including postcode, and a contact number.

The last item surprises students. You are asked for a UK address, and many applicants have not arranged accommodation yet. University accommodation, a confirmed private let or the address of a relative you will stay with all work. Have something written down before you go.

Photographs must be recent. IOM specifies no more than six months old, at one and a half by two inches. Studio photographs taken for your matric certificate five years ago are not going to pass, and the clinic will not argue about it.

Applicants under seventeen must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who can give consent. For younger children travelling with one parent, clinics may ask for a marriage certificate showing the father's name, or proof of the guardian relationship.

What about children under eleven?

Children under eleven are not normally x-rayed. They still attend, and they are still assessed. All children see a clinician who decides whether a chest x-ray is needed in that particular case, and a parent completes a health questionnaire at the approved clinic.

So the child is screened, just not by default with radiation. The fee is lower for that reason, PKR 10,000 at IOM and PKR 11,000 at AMC on the figures published in August 2026. A certificate is still issued and still has to go in with the application.

Where a clinician does decide an x-ray is warranted, perhaps because of a household contact with active TB or symptoms reported on the questionnaire, it will be arranged. That is a clinical decision, not an administrative one, and it is not something you can opt out of and still receive a certificate.

What if the x-ray shows something?

An unclear x-ray is not a refusal. It is a referral. The clinic will normally ask for a sputum test, which is examined over several weeks, and in some cases a repeat x-ray. This is the single largest source of delay in the whole process, and it is worth understanding before it happens to you.

Sputum culture takes time. Depending on the laboratory this can run to eight weeks or more, which is long enough to lose an intake. Students who leave the TB test until the last fortnight before applying have no room at all if this happens. Students who did it early have options.

If active TB is diagnosed you will not be issued a certificate until treatment is complete and you are cleared. That is not a permanent bar on studying in the UK. It is a delay, sometimes a long one, and it is handled clinically. Treatment for TB is available and free in Pakistan through the national programme, and a completed course followed by a clear result puts you back on track.

Old scarring on a lung from a childhood infection is common in Pakistan and often shows on an x-ray. It usually resolves with further tests confirming there is no active disease. Do not panic at the word abnormal, and do not hide a treatment history on the questionnaire. Declared history is manageable. Undeclared history that emerges later is a credibility problem, and credibility problems reach far beyond the medical file.

What goes wrong most often?

After years of processing UK applications from Lahore, the same handful of errors repeat.

  • Going to an unapproved hospital because a relative recommended it. The certificate is rejected and the money is gone.
  • Leaving the test until the fortnight before the application, then meeting a queue, a public holiday or a sputum referral.
  • Assuming the six months runs from the travel date rather than the application date.
  • Forgetting that dependants each need their own certificate.
  • Turning up without the Family Registration Certificate, or with photographs that are years old.
  • Booking the wrong city and losing two days to travel when Mirpur or Karachi had a centre.

None of these are complicated. They are all avoidable with a calendar and the official list open in front of you. They cost students an intake every year anyway.

If you want the whole sequence in order rather than this one step, our step by step guide to the UK student visa from Pakistan covers where the TB certificate sits among the other documents, and our explainer on how a CAS letter is issued and what it must contain covers the document most students are waiting on when they should be booking this test.

A realistic timeline

Take a student in Johar Town with a conditional offer from a university in Manchester for a September intake. Her plan is to apply in early July.

In April her offer becomes unconditional once her IELTS result arrives. In the second week of May she books the IOM centre in Gulberg, brings her passport, her Family Registration Certificate and three fresh photographs, pays the fee and spends most of a morning there. Her x-ray is clear and her certificate is issued with a May date.

Her CAS arrives in the third week of June. She files her visa application on 4 July. Her certificate, dated May, is comfortably inside the six month window, and it goes in with the rest of the file without anybody thinking about it again.

Now run the same student who waits. She books in late June, finds the next slot is the second week of July, attends, and is referred for a sputum test because of shadowing on the x-ray. Results take six weeks. She applies in late August, receives a decision in September, and starts in January instead. Nothing went wrong medically. She simply had no margin.

That gap between the two versions is the entire argument for doing this early. It costs the same either way.

Key takeaways

  • Pakistani students applying for a UK course of six months or more need a TB certificate. Treat it as mandatory.
  • Only Home Office approved clinics count. In Pakistan that means IOM in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur, or AMC in Islamabad and Lahore.
  • Budget PKR 10,000 to PKR 15,000 per person, and confirm the exact fee with the clinic when booking.
  • Validity is six months from the x-ray date, measured to your application date rather than your travel date.
  • Every dependant needs their own certificate.
  • Book early. A sputum referral can add six to eight weeks, and that is what costs students an intake.

Frequently asked questions

Is a TB test compulsory for every Pakistani student going to the UK?

For a course of six months or more, yes, in practice. Pakistan is on the Home Office list of countries where a test is required, and a certificate must be submitted with the entry clearance application. The rare exception is an applicant who has genuinely been living outside the listed countries for more than six months and can evidence it.

Can I use a chest x-ray from my own hospital?

No. The Home Office only accepts certificates from clinics it has approved, and states plainly that a test from an unapproved clinic will not be accepted. A private hospital x-ray, however good, cannot be substituted.

How long does the certificate last?

Six months from the date of your chest x-ray. The rules require it to have been issued within the six month period immediately before the date of application, so measure to the day you submit, not the day you fly.

How much should I budget?

Between PKR 10,000 and PKR 15,000 per person, depending on the clinic and whether the applicant is under eleven. Confirm the current figure with the clinic when you book, because published fees vary slightly between sources.

Which cities in Pakistan have approved clinics?

Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Mirpur. IOM operates in all four. AMC operates in Islamabad and Lahore. Applicants from Azad Kashmir often overlook the Mirpur centre.

Do my wife and children need their own tests?

Yes. Each applicant is assessed individually and each needs a certificate in their own name. One family certificate does not exist.

My daughter is six. Will she be x-rayed?

Not normally. Children under eleven are not usually given a chest x-ray, but every child must see a clinician who decides whether one is needed, and a parent completes a health questionnaire at the clinic.

What happens if my x-ray is not clear?

You are referred for further tests, usually a sputum examination that can take several weeks. It is not a visa refusal. It is a delay, and it is the main reason to book the test early rather than in the fortnight before applying.

I had TB as a child. Does that stop me?

No. Previous, treated TB does not bar you. Declare it on the questionnaire and bring your treatment records. Concealing a history that later emerges is far more damaging than the history itself.

How long does the appointment take?

IOM indicates roughly three to four hours for an assessment. Allow most of a morning, and expect longer during the June to August peak.

Can I book the test before I have my CAS?

Yes, and usually you should. The certificate is valid for six months, so testing once your offer and finances are settled gives you room if anything is referred for further investigation.

What do I need to bring to the appointment?

Your original passport and a copy, three recent passport size photographs on a white background, your Family Registration Certificate, any previous TB treatment records, and your UK address with postcode. The clinic supplies the health questionnaire.
