Who can apply for a UK Student visa from Pakistan?

You can apply for a UK Student visa if you are 16 or over, you have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor, you can support yourself financially, and you can speak, read, write and understand English. The Student visa replaced the old Tier 4 (General) route, so if you still see the term Tier 4 on an older website, it means the same thing.

The licensed sponsor part matters more than people think. A UK university or college can only issue you the electronic document you need, the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, if it holds a valid sponsor licence from the Home Office. Almost every well known university does, but private colleges vary, so always check the sponsor before you pay a deposit. For a degree level course, most applicants from Pakistan hold Matric, FSc or A Levels for a bachelor programme, or a recognised bachelor degree for a master. A weaker academic record is not automatically fatal. Every figure and name in these documents has to match your CAS and your application form exactly. How much money do you need to show?

You must prove you can pay your first year tuition fee plus living costs. For living costs the Home Office sets a fixed monthly figure and you show up to nine months of it. As confirmed on GOV.UK, if you apply on or after 2 January 2025 you need 1,483 pounds per month for a course in London and 1,136 pounds per month for a course outside London.

Nine months of living money therefore comes to 13,347 pounds in London and 10,224 pounds outside London. On top of that you add the outstanding tuition fee for your first year, which your CAS states. If you have already paid a deposit, the CAS shows the reduced balance, and you only need to prove the remaining amount.

The 28 day rule is strict. The money must sit in an eligible account for at least 28 days in a row, and the closing balance on your statement must be dated within 31 days of the date you submit your application. The balance must not drop below the required total on any single day inside that window, even for one day. What are the step by step stages to apply?

Here is the order that works in practice for a Pakistani student. Treat it as a checklist and complete each stage before moving on.

1. Choose your course and university. Confirm the sponsor licence and the total tuition fee. Compare living costs too, because a cheaper city outside London lowers your financial requirement.
2. Receive and accept an offer. First a conditional offer, then an unconditional offer once you meet the conditions such as an English score or final transcripts.
3. Pay any required deposit and receive your CAS. The university issues the CAS after you accept and settle the deposit. Check every detail on it before you apply.
4. Sit an approved English test if needed. Many degree students can use a university assessment, but a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI is the safest route from Pakistan.

How much does the UK Student visa cost in 2026?

There are two compulsory government charges, and both are paid when you submit the online form. As stated on GOV.UK in 2026, the Student visa application fee from outside the UK is 558 pounds. The Immigration Health Surcharge is 776 pounds for each year of your visa, and it gives you access to the National Health Service during your studies.

How long does it take from Pakistan?

The standard processing time for a Student visa applied for outside the UK is about three weeks after your biometrics appointment. That is a guide, not a guarantee, and busy periods before the September and January intakes can stretch it. Do you need IELTS and English proof?

You must prove you can use English at the level your course requires, which is usually B1 or B2 on the common European scale. For many degree level courses the university is allowed to assess your English itself, sometimes through your past study or its own test, and it then confirms this on your CAS. Do you need a TB test and ATAS?

Pakistan is on the list of countries where applicants must have a tuberculosis test if they are coming to the UK for more than six months. You take a chest X ray, and sometimes further tests, at a clinic approved by the UK authorities. The certificate is valid for six months, so do not take it too early. Without it, your application will be refused, so treat it as compulsory.

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme, ATAS, applies to certain sensitive subjects at master and doctoral level, mostly in science, engineering and technology. If your course needs it, your CAS or offer letter will say so, and you must obtain the free ATAS certificate before you apply. Why do UK student visas get refused?

Most refusals from Pakistan come down to a handful of avoidable errors rather than anything about the student being unwelcome. Watch these closely.

• Funds held for the wrong period. The balance dipped below the threshold inside the 28 days, or the statement was older than 31 days at submission.
• Wrong account or unexplained money. Using an account type that is not allowed, or a sudden large deposit with no clear source, raises a genuine funds question.
• Missing TB certificate or ATAS. Both are hard requirements and their absence gives an automatic refusal.
• Mismatched details. Names, dates or course titles that differ across the CAS, passport and financial papers.
